ChatGPT is changing the way people search the internet by developing an AI-powered conversational search engine that responds to questions in natural language. Rather than entering long search queries and sifting through hundreds of results, users can simply type their query in natural language and get an immediate response.
Microsoft has made a significant investment in OpenAI in order to advance ChatGPT and other AI projects. What does this mean for the future of Google, the dominant search engine for over two decades?
Microsoft owns Bing, which is the second most popular search engine right now with a market share of about 9%, last reported in December 2022. It is clear that Google, with a market share of 85%, will need to adapt to the changing landscape of AI and conversational search engines to stay competitive.
Developed by OpenAI, which is an AI research and deployment company. Their mission "is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity." ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an AI-powered chatbot that is designed to respond to natural language conversations.
OpenAI launched GhatGPT in November 2022, and since then it has gained immense popularity in the AI research and development world due to its powerful generative capabilities and ability to learn quickly from conversations. In particular, ChatGPT is capable of providing accurate and contextually relevant answers to questions and can also detect when a conversation's topic has changed.
Through ChatGPT, OpenAI is looking to bridge the gap between human and AI communication by developing a chatbot that is more natural and intuitive than ever before.
It is important to understand that ChatGPT is not a search engine, and therefore it cannot provide a direct answer to every question asked. As of right now, it is learning from a predetermined sample of data and is not connected to the web.
ChatGPT uses a combination of natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) to learn how humans communicate and understand conversational context.
It is worth noting that the ChatGPT learning model currently only allows access to information prior to 2021. This is due to the fact that OpenAI believes it is essential to use only factual, reliable, and verifiable data when training ChatGPT.
When asked, techcrunch.com discovered the following from ChatGPT:
"When we suggested it provide information it holds on this prior to 2021, when its training stopped, it responded by claiming it holds no data about the political beliefs of its funders before then either: I’m sorry, but I don’t have any information about the politics of the individuals and organisations who donated money to fund the development of OpenAI and ChatGPT prior to 2021. As a large language model trained by OpenAI, my knowledge is based on the text that I have been trained on, and I do not have any information about the personal or political beliefs of the people and organisations who have donated to OpenAI." ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionise search engines by providing faster, more accurate, and more natural-sounding results to users by utilising the natural language processing capabilities of search engines, they will be able to better understand the query entered by a user as well as its context.
Currently, search engines use keyword-based algorithms to produce results. However, with ChatGPT's natural language processing (NLP) capabilities, it can understand and respond to questions in a conversational, human-like manner. This shift from keyword-based algorithms to conversational searches could lead to a more intuitive and user-friendly search experience.
Additionally, ChatGPT's ability to understand context and provide relevant answers could lead to even more sophisticated search experiences in the future. For example, it could eventually lead to personalised search results based on an individual's search history, interests, and preferences.
As more people adopt this technology and demand for conversational search engines increases, traditional search engines may need to adapt and incorporate similar capabilities to remain competitive. Overall, ChatGPT has the potential to disrupt and revolutionise the search engine industry and the way we access information on the internet.
Greg Noone from techmonitor.ai had this to say:
"Generative AI isn’t a Google killer. But it will change search forever. ChatGPT has illustrated just how potent conversational chatbots can be in responding to search queries. Google is having none of it...."
Google's search business may suffer from ChatGPT's alternative search method.
In reaction to the popularity of OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's founders have given their approval to plans to integrate chatbot functionality into the search engine. This year, Google will show off a version of its search engine that works with chatbots and more than 20 new AI products.
This information is released as Google's parent firm, Alphabet, is laying off employees. Due to the hiring surge during the epidemic and worries about the economic slump, the corporation said on Friday that it will eliminate almost 12,000 employees.
Several new startups, like You.com and Neeva, have already passed Google by being able to answer questions through a chatbot like ChatGPT.
A report says that Microsoft is also working on a version of Bing that uses chatbot technology. This version is expected to come out in March.
